This Whispering Waters Braeval is a single cask, cask-strength single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside distillery Braeval, bottled at 60.2% ABV under The Whiskey Lab's in-house independent label, Whispering Waters.
It was distilled on 28 October 2014 and bottled on 14 October 2024, just 14 days shy of its tenth birthday. Scotch Whisky Association rules require age statements to round down, so it is labelled as a 9 year old, while the precise 9.97 years is shown on the front. The single cask yielded only 306 bottles.
Single malt bottlings from Braeval are rare, as almost all of the automated distillery's output is reserved for premium blended Scotch such as Chivas Regal. Here the naturally light Speyside spirit meets dense, sweet sherry maturation in a cask-strength sherry bomb, bottled at natural colour and without chill filtration.
With only 306 bottles, it is a collector's gift for lovers of independent single casks.
Sip it neat, then add a few drops of water to open it.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
Independent bottlers buy individual casks from distilleries and bottle them under their own label, often at full cask strength and without colouring or chill filtration. Each single cask release is a snapshot of one barrel, so once the bottles are gone, that exact whisky is gone too.
