Wiggly Bridge Small Barrel Bourbon is aged four years in new small American oak barrels with a medium toast and medium char, made by Wiggly Bridge Distillery in York, Maine, and bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).
Wiggly Bridge was founded by a father-and-son team, both named David Woods, who opened the distillery on Repeal Day, December 5, 2013, the 80th anniversary of the end of Prohibition. They hand built their own custom small-batch stills in York. The distillery is named after a local landmark, the Wiggly Bridge, a small pedestrian suspension bridge built in 1930.
The bourbon is a burnt amber color. The aroma brings sweet caramel, rich oak, toast, a hint of fresh cedar, nuts and cigar box. The palate is balanced and complex, with caramel, oak, dried fruit, cinnamon, pepper, sweet tobacco, honey and grain, and the finish is dry, long and pleasant, with cinnamon and clove.
It is a great gift from coastal Maine.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
