Wolfburn Morven is a lightly peated single malt Scotch whisky from Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso, the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland, bottled at 46% ABV.
Morven joined Wolfburn's core range in late 2017. It is made from malted barley infused with peat smoke during drying, a nod to Wolfburn's history, since the original nineteenth-century distillery was largely fired by peat. After gentle distillation, the whisky matures in purpose-built warehouses, giving a beautifully smooth and rounded result. The original Wolfburn fell silent in the 1870s, and industry veterans revived the name in Thurso in 2011.
Initially smoky on the nose, with fruit, fresh sea air, vanilla and oak wood shavings. Florals abound on the palate, followed by raisins and light spice, and malty flavours open up to a soft honey sweetness at the finish.
A gently smoky malt from the far north of Scotland, it makes a fine gift.
Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
Peat is partly decomposed vegetation burned to dry malted barley; lightly peated malt gives a gentle wisp of smoke rather than the heavy smoke of Islay whisky.
Thurso, on Scotland's far north coast facing Orkney, gives the whisky its maritime setting.
Bottled at 46% ABV, it keeps more texture and flavour than a standard 40% whisky.
Single malt Scotch is made only from malted barley at a single distillery and aged at least three years in oak in Scotland.
