Woodinville Moscatel Finished is Woodinville Whiskey Company's flagship five-year straight bourbon, finished in 10-year-old, 200-gallon Moscatel de Setúbal barrels and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV) as a limited release.
Moscatel de Setúbal is a rare fortified wine produced on the Setúbal Peninsula of Portugal, a region known for its ideal climate for these wines. Woodinville's fully mature straight bourbon, from Washington State, is transferred into the large ex-Moscatel pipes for its finish.
The finishing adds notes of dried apricot and orange peel, with honey and toffee sweetness. Candied nuts and a hint of fennel lead into a lingering finish.
A distinctive wine-finished bourbon from the Pacific Northwest, it makes a fine gift for bourbon lovers.
Enjoy it neat or with a splash of water.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
A straight bourbon is made from at least 51% corn and aged at least two years in new charred oak containers, with nothing added but water.
Finishing a bourbon means moving the mature whiskey into a second cask for an extra period, so it picks up some character from that cask's previous contents.
Fortified wines such as Moscatel are strengthened with grape spirit, and their casks carry rich, sweet, fruity character.
