Xoloitzcuintle Extra Añejo is a high-proof extra añejo tequila from the Highlands of Jalisco, made from 100% Blue Weber agave, aged five years in American oak barrels and bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) in a one-litre bottle.
The brand is named after the Xoloitzcuintle, Mexico's ancient hairless dog, which tradition says guides souls on their journey back to the living on Día de Muertos. True to the brand's philosophy, the tequila is bottled at an expression-preserving high proof with minimal dilution, so the natural character of the agave stays prominent even after half a decade in wood.
Five years in American oak give a constant oak note with vanilla, dark berries and toasted agave that carry from start to finish. On the nose, warm vanilla, toasted oak, dried fruit and a hint of dark chocolate sit over soft cooked agave. The palate brings roasted caramel, butterscotch, stewed plum and cinnamon spice, with velvety espresso, dark chocolate and white pepper.
The tall, illustrated bottle and its generous litre size make it a striking gift for a serious tequila drinker.
Sip it slowly, neat, from a snifter.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
