Yuu Baal Espadín is an artisanal joven mezcal made from farm-grown Espadín agave by mezcalero Isaías Martínez Juan in San Juan del Río, Oaxaca, and bottled at 96 proof (48% ABV).
Grupo Yuu Baal is a 100% Mexican company and social enterprise that highlights the traditions of the native Oaxacan producers of mezcal, with producers in San Juan del Río, San Luis del Río, Tlacolula and Miahuatlán. The complete cycle of production, from planting and cutting to distillation, is done by hand with respect for tradition: the estate-grown agave is baked and crushed by stone using traditional methods.
It has a nice, soft flavor followed by a refreshing but vigorous intensity that reflects the first years of the maguey. Aromas of Fresno chile and mango lead to tropical fruit flavors that become increasingly spicy, with light smoke, citrus pith and a creamy mouthfeel, and a long, salty and mineral finish.
Excellent for all occasions, as an aperitif or after a meal.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
